Disclaimer: This project was conceived by the SCAD team and created for the 2020 Walt Disney Imagineering’s Imaginations Design Competition. The competition is a way for students and recent graduates to showcase their talents and for Walt Disney Imagineering to identify new talent. (Partnered with Celine Ngai)

In the group of two, my teammate and I created an iconic installation on the campus that serves as an inspiration, honors the past, and is a vision of the future. I participated as the team leader and contributed to concept art and layout design.

Our intentions behind the idea resonate with a quote from the Avatamsaka Sutra, “The very beginning mind itself is the most accomplished mind of true enlightenment.” Through the story, we want to convey the idea of ‘be yourself;’ not to be ashamed of your past, your childhood, or your family. Learn to embrace it and turn it into something beautiful. The installation revolves around Shang’s (our protagonist) relationship with trash and the overcoming of shame and indignity about it. We also want to highlight the theme of mother love in this project. Where it is important to cherish it before regretting not to.
